Internship Battery Intern
Chemical Engineering or Battery Intern – Intern
The position encompasses two areas of focus: 1) Evaluation and failure analyses of lithium ion batteries in HP mobility products, and 2) Application of a variety of analytical methods to evaluate reliability of materials in HP products.
Demonstrated foundation knowledge in some of the following disciplines is required:
1) Engineering (mechanical and/or electrical)
2) Physical sciences (chemistry, physics, etc.)
3) Material science
4) Analytical chemistry.
The position is for a continuing internship (18 hours/week during school terms and 40 hours/week when school is adjourned) until completion of higher education degree.Continued employment in position is contingent upon successful, full-time progress toward degree completion.
- Learn and understand foundational aspects of lithium ion battery technology through published literature, prior experience, and instruction from senior lab engineer/scientist.
- Apply knowledge of lithium ion battery technology to assist in all aspects of failure analyses of field returned lithium ion battery packs in HP products.
- Provide failure analysis support, through applied analytical (chemical and mechanical) methods, to resolve product issues associated with material compatibility, latent unreliability, and contamination.
- Develop familiarity with chemistries, concepts, and manufacturing processes of materials and components within HP mobility products.
- Assist the intern mentor in needed tasks and functions associated with product/material reliability assessments.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year successful completion (i.e. sophomore status) toward Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or equivalent physical science
- Completion of 1 year of ACS chemistry, 1 year of physics (calculus-based), and/or 1 year of chemical/electrical engineering.
- Prior laboratory experience is extremely desirable.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to apply the “scientific method” toward resolution of complex material product failures.
- Analytical and problem solving skills, i.e. critical thinking skills.
- Understanding of chemistry, material properties, hardware, and electrical component design.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of/experience in using materials/chemistry analytical tools: SEM/EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), 2D/3D X-ray imaging, and XRF (X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy).
