We are seeking a SIP R&D – Undergraduate Summer
The Ion Beam Laboratory has undergraduate opportunities in multiple areas.
- Nanomechanics of materials. The goal is fundamental understanding of deformation mechanisms in nanograined materials. Here, the student could support research through TEM sample preparation, image and video analysis, designing and building experimental apparatus, and performing experiments under the supervision of technical staff.
- Novel quantum devices. The research goal is to design, fabricate, and test single photon sources in diamond. Here, the student could support research through device processing, ion implantation, and optical measurements.
- Radiation effects on materials. In addition, there are a variety of other research projects in the Ion Beam Laboratory. Here, the student would work closely with technical staff to design, perform, and analyze data from experiments similar to those above.
Qualifications We Require
The successful candidate must meet the following Sandia Student Intern Requirements: Official acceptance into an accredited university’s undergraduate program, full-time enrollment during the spring term immediately preceding the internship (typically 12 credit hours), a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2/4.0, and the ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer. U.S. citizenship.
Major in a technical field, such as physics, materials science, electrical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, or other science or engineering degree.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience with science or engineering experimental work, such as independent research or a summer program.
- Direct experience related to the main projects called out in the posting (nanomechanics, TEM, quantum devices, device processing, etc).
About Our Team
The Radiation-Solid Interaction Department operates the newly-constructed $40M Ion Beam Laboratory at Sandia National Laboratories. This state-of-the-art facility houses 4 major accelerators: a 6 MV Tandem, a 3 MV Pelletron, a 400 kV implanter, and a unique 100 kV Nano Implanter with a <20nm spot size. Other experimental facilities include micro beam lines on all the major accelerators, a pulsed laser deposition system for synthesizing unique films, and a TEM, equipped with gas, fluid, and nanomechanical stages, with in-situ ion irradiation available from both the Tandem and a Colutron source. The Ion Beam Laboratory is actively engaged in three major research thrusts: (1) Understanding the performance of materials in radiation environments. These projects impact the performance of microelectronics in space and other hostile environments, and fuel and cladding materials in nuclear reactor and storage environments. (2) Developing and applying novel ion beam techniques to precisely measure materials compositions. Applications in this area include mapping hydrogen isotopes in fusion wall material, and measuring the composition of thin complex materials such as transition metal oxides.(3) Exploring the materials science of defects in solids. This broad area includes single ion implants for quantum applications, anomalous grain growth in nanograined materials, hydride formation under irradiation, and nanomechanical responses of materials.In each thrust the department provides unique capabilities to multidisciplinary teams with an interest in publishing high quality research and applying the results to problems of national interest.
